Nadi Attractions - Things to do
Navala Village is about a 50 minute drive from Nadi in the highlands. This is one of only a few remaining traditional villages and is set amongst mountains on a river. The houses, or bures, have thatch roofs, woven bamboo walls, and are just single room dwellings. Cooking facilities and bathrooms are housed separately out the back. The 200 bures are set in the shape of a cross around a village green. Visiting Navala generally includes a welcome introduction ceremony where guests bond by drinking the traditional Fijian drink of Kava. A village tour will include the local school and Catholic church. It is considered polite to present the village chief with a bundle of yaqona roots, which are used to make the kava you have just drunk. The drive is a little bumpy but well worth it for the scenery and experience. Sabeto River Valley is a half day journey where you will come across the Sleeping Giant Mountains, and the Gardens of the Sleeping Giant. These gardens are a huge collection of orchids that was started by Raymond Burr, aka Perry Mason. The Sleeping Giant Mountains are the mountains that you see when in Nadi. The official name for the these mountains are the Sabeto Range. The Sabeto River Road is past the Sabeto Range Rd and will allow you to visit caves and a waterfall. You will need to take your own water and provisions and be happy to spend half the journey on an unsealed road. Coral Coast Historical Tour. There are 3 historical sites on the Coral Coast that can be rolled into the one sightseeing journey. These 3 locations are all within 60 minutes of driving from Nadi and are all quite close together. The 3 sites are the Sigatoka Sanddune National Park, the Tavuni Hill Fort, and the Nakabuta Pottery Village. The Sigatoka sanddunes have an impressive amount amount of shards of Lapita pottery, and ancient settlements. Tavuni Hill Fort is inland a little, and is a memorial to Fiji's more aggressive times. This fort dates back to the Fiji Wars of 1800s, and has an information centre, views over the Sigatoke River Valley, and the infamous killig stone that was used to kill enemies before they were eaten. The Nakabuta Pottery village is across the river and is a traditional living village. You will see thatch homes and be shown how traditional pottery is made. Traditional lovo lunches cooked in underground ovens are lunch. (Better that than the enemy.) Mamanuca Islands Day Cruises and Trips. One of the very most popular trips out of Nadi is to the beautiful Mamanuca Islands. These islands look just like those ones on the website and brochures. Sparkling blue water, lots of white sand, and plenty of water activities. There are many day trips to select from including snorkelling, day sailing or cruising, dolphin watching, and uninhabited island tours. These islands are serviced by fast catamarans out of Denarau marina and the journey can be as quick as 20 minutes to the nearest island in the group. You can expect to see blue lagoons and coral reefs. http://www.fijime.com/
