Monkey Mia Attractions - Things to do
Meet the Monkey Mia Dolphins. Since 1964, some of the local bottlenose dolphin population have been coming in daily to the shallow waters to interact with humans. There is a pod of about 300 dolphins in the bay, but only some opt to come in for a play. Department of Environment and Conservation staff supervise the feeding of the dolphins 3 times daily. They also check the well being of the mammals on a daily basis. The dolphins are fed small amounts of fish between roughly 8am and 1pm. As a general rule dolphins will come in every day. However, you may or may not be allowed to feed them. Shell Beach is located on the other side of Peron Peninsula to Monkey Mia. When you get here you will see why it is called Shell Beach. Basically as far as the eye can see there are gazillions, officially it is billions, of white shells everywhere. In fact the shells run for 60 km and to a depth of about 7-10 metres. (That's a lot of shells.) The shells are technically coquina bivalves and they just love the ultra salty waters of LHaridon Bight in Shark Bay. The visual effect of all these tiny white shells contrasting against the amazing turquoise waters is awesome and extremely photo worthy. This National Park can only be accessed by 4WD and offers the keen fisherman plenty of remote fishing spots. This park consists of red sand dunes and dry shrub land which is totally surrounded by beautiful clear turquoise waters. The water is so clear that when you stand on the cliffs you will be able to spot manta rays, sharks, dugongs, turtles, and when in season, whales. Emus also call this park home. Peron Homestead is located in the south of the park and has a great visitors information centre. Not only are there dolphins but dugongs, sharks, turtles, sting rays, sea snakes and whales are all other marine creatures you may encounter on your cruise. Multiple cruises are available every day, with some lasting 1 hour and others going for a few. The owners assert that they do not use any force or nose pegs on their animals. Aboriginal Cultural Walk. Learn how the local Aboriginals, the Malagna people, have lived and survived in the Peron Peninsula (Gathaagudu in their language, which means two waters). See which plants you can and can't eat, and their bush medicine techniques. There are usually several tours to select from including the Daytime 'Buna' Dreaming which runs from 9 to 10.30 am, the Dusk 'Maru Maru' Dreaming which runs from 4.30 to 6.30 pm and Didgeridoo Dreaming which runs from 8.30 to 9.30 pm by campfire.
