Port Lincoln Attractions - Things to do
Axel Stenross Maritime Museum is a hands on maritime museum. Firstly, pretty much everything there can be touched and played with. Secondly there is a fully functioning slipway. The museum also houses one of Australia's largest collections of splices and knots. Axel Stenross was a boat builder who was born in Finland, but moved to Port Lincoln in 1927. Axel Stenross built boats all of his adult life. This maritime museum houses newspaper clipping and photos documenting the maritime and fishing history of Port Lincoln, along with a great displays of tools that were used previously for the building of wooden dinghies and boats. This is a must see for all boaties. Open Tues, Thurs, and Sundays 9.30 to 4.30. Saturdays and Public holidays 1pm to 4.30 pm. The Railway Museum is located at the Port Lincoln Railway Station and displays all manner of railway memorabilia and historical equipment. The Railway line to Port Lincoln was finished in 1907 and this building was the original railway station and administration offices. The building is a beautiful example of stone masonry from that era and is built from duck pond stone. The Investigator Walking Trail is named for the HMS Investigator, Matthew Flinders' ship at the time of his discovery of Port Lincoln. Those visitors who enjoy walking, have packed their sand shoes and have a few days to spare may like to consider this scenic walking trail through the Southern Eyre Peninsula. The entire trail is 93 km long, and can take about 4 to 5 days to complete. Don't despair, there are shorter loops that you can do in a half day or day. The entire trail includes North Shields, Port Lincoln, around the marina, and the Lincoln National Park. The trail will provide you with gorgeous coastal scenery including mobile sand dunes, offshore islands, protected bays, and stunning beaches. The ocean can also change dramatically from the calm waters of Coffin bay to other sections where the Southern Ocean comes crashing in with all its might. Many consider Coffin Bay Peninsula to be the most spectacular coastline of South Australia. Not all of the coastline here is accessible by 2WD, a 4WD is by no means necessary but will be able to take you off the bitumen road. There are many walking trails here and the wild life includes emus, kangaroos, goannas and dolphins. URL: http://www.coffinbay.net/
