Lightning Ridge Attractions - Things to do
The Walk-In Mine is located at Bald Hill. You can learn everything to do with opal mining from fossil displays, underground mining, and mining operations while being guided through this 45 year old original opal mine. There is also a mining video and an opal and jewellery showroom. See and hear for yourself how tough the woking conditions are for opal miners. The Open Mine is open 7 days a week from 9am to 5pm, with tours at 9.30 am and 1.30 pm.
Australian Opal Centre in Morilla St is another chance to learn all about opal mining. This may be a little more suitable for those travelling with younger children, those who do not want to wear a hard hat, and those who don't like dirt and dust. This centre displays Lightning Ridge in all its historic glory when dinosaurs roamed and fossils were being made. This centre provides plenty of information on the history of Lightning Ridge, opal, opal mining, and life in the outback. Open 9am -3pm Monday to Thursday and Saturdays. Free admission but plenty of souvenirs to buy inside.

Artesian Bore Baths are located in Pandora St. These therapeutic and relaxing baths are open 24 hours daily, and are free. These naturally heated warm mineralised waters are naturally forced up from 900 metres below the earth's surface. A must do for anyone who is tired and sore after a day of seeking the elusive black opal.

The Black Queen Experience is a 3 act play about life in the outback. This tourism experience combines both theatre and museum as it looks at the rewards and challenges of living in Lightning Ridge. These performances are interactive and bookings are essential. You can catch this performance at 9am, 1pm, and 3pm at the Black Queen opal mine.
