Larnaca Attractions - Things to do
Pieredes Foundation Museum The Pieredes Foundation was set up by Demetrios Pierides in 1839. The aim of the foundation was to buy Cypriot archaeological artifacts to prevent them being sold outside of Cyprus. The Foundation is based in Larnaca, and has a museum there, as well as in Athens. The Foundation is still run by the Pieredes family, and it supports studies in archaeology, arranges exhibitions and events, repatriates Cypriot antiques, and sponsors excavations. http://www.pieridesfoundation.com.cy/ St. Lazarus Church Saint Lazarus is the patron saint of Larnaca because it became his home after he was supposedly resurrected by Christ. He lived in Larnaca, then known as Kition, for thirty years and was ordained Bishop. St. Lazarus Church was built around his tomb in the ninth century and is a superb example of Byzantine architecture. It was carefully restored in the seventeenth century. http://www.ayioslazaros.org/ Larnaca Salt Lake This is a unique and protected area of natural beauty that provides a feeding and roosting area for eighty different species of birds. Of particular interest are the flamingoes that spend the winter on Cyprus, although the salt lake is also a stop over for many other species of migratory birds. In the summer the lake dries up, leaving a layer of crusty white salt. On the shore of the salt lake is the Hala Sultan Tekke, a very important Islamic site that includes the tomb of Umm Haram. http://www.visitcyprus.com/
