Kansas City Attractions - Things to do
The 18th & Vine Historic Jazz District is home to a number of important sites. The American Jazz Museum and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum are both in this neighborhood. Live jazz and blues clubs can also be found here and elsewhere in town. (http://www.18thandvinedistrict.org/) The Crossroads Arts District is home to dozens of galleries. There are also a dozen restaurants as well as bars, theatres and dance companies based in this section of the downtown. (http://www.kccrossroads.org/) Union Station is at the heart of the downtown. This historic landmark train station was built in 1914. Today, in addition to serving as an Amtrak stop, it is filled with restaurants, shops and exhibits in the splendor of its recently restored interior design. (http://www.unionstation.org/aboutus.html) Nearby towns in the metropolitan area also hold sights to be seen. Independence, Missouri, is where the Harry S Truman Home, a National Historic attraction under the care of the National Parks Service, is found. The 33rd US President had lived here with his wife Bess from 1919 until going to Washington. Later the couple returned. This president’s former farm home is also in this town. (http://www.nps.gov/hstr/index.htm) The Arabia Steamboat Museum is less than 2 km outside of town. This museum is dedicated to the steamboats that once carried travellers along the Missouri and other rivers. Part of the museum is on board the Arabia itself, which was restored after being lost and later found buried beneath Kansas farmland. (http://www.1856.com/)
