When Darwin was bombed in 1942, thousands of American troops started arriving in North West Queensland. When Darwin hospital was bombed a decision was made to protect the Mt Isa district hospital. A large air raid shelter was excavated, its purpose being to operate as a fully functional underground hospital. The excavation work was carried out by miners off duty and on weekends. The underground hospital had an operating theatre, a delivery room, maternity ward, children's ward, and both male and female wards. Fortunately Mount Isa was not bombed during World War 11. In 1995 it was decided to convert the underground hospital into a tourist attraction. The underground hospital is open from 10 am to 2 pm every day except Christmas and the Wet season. Riversleigh Fossil Fields are located in the southern section of Boodjamulla National Park and were placed on the World Heritage List in 1994. These fossils are preserved in limestone and are considered to be outstanding representations of the evolution of Australian mammals and reptiles. Some of these fossils are 15-25 million years old. The extinct marsupial lion is fossilised as are the still living feather tailed possums and marsupial moles. The Riversleigh fossil deposits are considered to be among the best and most extensive in the world. url:::: http://www.queenslandholidays.com.au/things-to-see-and-do/riversleigh-fossil-fields/ Lawn Hill Gorge is located about a 4 or 5 hour drive, or 340 km north west from Mt Isa. Well you are in the middle of the outback. This road is for the 4WD enthusiasts only and can only be accessed in the dry. Lawn Hill Gorge is in the Boodjamulla National Park and is considered to be one of Queensland's most scenic national parks with sandstone cliffs, fossils, and amazing gorges. The emerald waters combined with the looming sandstone cliffs along with plenty of vegetation and wildlife attracted by numerous freshwater springs make this a camera worthy location.
