Hangzhou Attractions - Things to do
West Lake The scenic West Lake lies to the southwest of the city and extends over an area of 60 square kilometers(23 square miles). The Lake is surrounded by lush hills and trees and faces the city of Hanghzhou. There are three causeways or bridges that traverse this body of water which is equipped with three man-made islands which are called Santangyinyue (Three Pools Mirroring the Moon), Huxin Ting (Mid-Lake Pavilion) and Ruan Dunhuanbi (Ruan’s Mound, after the Governor of Zhejiang in 1800, Ruan Yuan). Six Harmonies Pagoda This beautiful Pagoda which is located on the north bank of the Qiantang River was built in 970 AD. This eight sided Pagoda which is a seven-storeyed structure has thirteen upturned eaves which get narrower towards the summit of the pagoda. The Pagoda is equipped with a spiral staircase which leads to its summit and located at this summit is an observation deck from where people can get a great view of the Qiantang River and its bridge. The ceiling of each level of the Pagoda is intricately carved and adorned with delicate Chinese paintings that featurelowers, birds and animals. The Lingyin Temple The Lingyin Temple which is also known as the Temple of the Soul’s Retreat is named after its tranquil surroundings as the temple is situated in the midst of lush verdant hills which enclose the temple completely. This temple was founded in 326 AD by an Indian Monk. The temple was subsequently expanded over the years and during the Five Dynasties Period, the temple was made up of 9 buildings, 18 towers, 72 halls with 1,300 rooms which housed over 3000 monks. The temple has been damaged and also renovated through the ages and it was recently rebuilt to reflect its original style. This temple today consists of various halls like the Hall of the Heavenly King, Hall of the Great Hero, Hall of the Buddha of Medicine and various other buildings. The Hall of the Heavenly King houses a statue of Maitreya which is the name given to the laughing Buddha. The Hall of the Great Hero similarly houses a spectacular statue of Sakyamuni, founder of Buddhism. The temple is one of most important Buddhist temples in the world which has a treasure trove of Buddhist relics and treasures. The National Silk Museum This museum is located on the southern bank of the West Lake and is the first state level professional silk museum in China. This silk museum is also the largest silk museum in the world which opened its doors to the public in 1992. The museum is made up of eight exhibition halls namely the Preface Hall, Relics Hall, Folk-custom Hall, Dyeing and Weaving Hall and Modern Achievements Hall which chronicle the evolution of sericulture in China and the history of its spread all throughout the world.
