Goa Attractions - Things to do

Beaches

Goa is divided into two distinct sections known as North and South Goa by the Mandovi River . Both these sections of Goa are blessed with gorgeous beaches though the beaches of North Goa are more commercialized than those in South Goa as they are populated by beach shacks, restaurants, night clubs and road side stalls that sell all kinds of beach apparel, artifacts, jewelry, leather goods and many other products that the tourists require for their beach holiday in Goa.

he beaches of North Goa extend from the north bank of the Mandovi River and include beaches like Calangute(called the Queen of Beaches),Bogmalo, Candolim, Baga, Mandrem , Arambol, Vagator and Morjim.

The beaches of North Goa see brisk tourist traffic in the peak season as tourists who want ‘action’ tend to gravitate towards these beaches which also have facilities for many water sports. South Goa on the other hand is home to some tranquil but beautiful beaches like Agonda, Benaulim Beach, Colva, Palolem,Patnem amongst others.

The Anjuna Flea Market

The renowned Anjuna Flea market is held every Wednesday at the beach town of Anjuna. This market which originated as a marketplace for the hippies as they sought to sell their wares in order to accumulate funds for an extended stay in Goa now features traders from all over India. The vendors of Anjuna Market also include the tribal Lamani women of Karnataka who come to the market dressed in their traditional garb. These vendors sell all sorts of products including native textiles, silver jewelry, papier-mâché boxes, Tibetan arte-facts, wall hangings and carvings, wooden furniture , apparel and much more. The Anjuna Flea market should be included as a must-do attraction on any visit Goa itinerary. The market which also features much local entertainment and music assembles at 9am and trading usually continues until dusk.

Old Goa

Most of the prominent landmarks of Goa are located in the city of Old Goa which is a UNESCO declared world heritage site. This enclave which is located in North Goa , the capital until the capital of the Portuguese colonial territory until 1843 when Panaji was designated as the capital. Old Goa is dotted with several opulent churches and cathedrals as well as the ruins of a gateway which dates from the times of the Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur. The most famous monument of Old Goa is the Basilica of Bom Jesus. This famous church holds the remains of St Francis Xavier , a missionary who was credited with the spread of Christianity in the Far East. On December 3rd each year during the feast of St Francis ,the fingernail of the Saint is displayed publicly. The exposition of the body which lies embalmed in a silver casket takes place once in ten years.

Also located within the boundaries of Old Goa is the imposing gothic structure of the Se Cathedral which houses the largest church bell in Asia and various churches like the Church of St Francis of Assisi which is adorned with much woodwork and is known for its many colored murals. The Church of St Monica and the Church of St Catejan are some of the other famous churches that are also located within the environs of Old Goa.

The Dudhsagar Waterfall

This waterfall is the second highest waterfall in India which is located in North Goa on the border with the neighboring state of Karnataka. The Dudhsagar which when literally translated means a ‘Sea of Milk’ is composed of waters which thunder down from a high cliff located in the densely forested Western Ghats (hills). The falls present a spectacular sight in the monsoon season when the waters are at full flow due to the incessant rains. The waterfalls are easily accessible by train from Margoa as well as by bus and taxi and make for an interesting day trip from Goa.
