Genova Attractions - Things to do
Galata Museo del Mare The largest maritime museum in the Mediterranean, the Galata Museo del Mare celebrates Genoa’s sea fearing past and is located in the Old Galley’s Arsenal. Visitors can learn about Christopher Columbus and Andrea Doria, who both came from Genoa, and can explore a faithful reconstruction of a seventeenth century galley, amongst other exhibits. http://www.galatamuseodelmare.it/ Acquario di Genova Genoa’s aquarium is a must see for those travelling with children, and dolphins, jelly fish, stingrays, sharks and seals can all be seen. There is even a pool where the children can touch rays. The aquarium is located in the old harbour, next to the pier, and the structure incorporates a decommissioned ship containing varied marine environments such as a red coral reef and an Amazonian rainforest pool. Try to visit during the week as weekends can be very crowded. http://www.acquariodigenova.it/ Cattedrale di San Lorenzo Located in Piazza San Lorenzo, the nineteenth century cathedral is a gothic masterpiece, and is instantly recognisable by its grey and white striped façade. The doors are medieval, showing the martyrdom of St Lawrence, a patron saint of the city, along with other bible stories. Inside the cathedral the Cappella di San Giovanni Battista and the Museo del Tesoro can be found. These house Byzantine relics and trinkets, and a silver urn that is said to hold the ashes of John the Baptist. http://www.museigenova.it
