Gaya Attractions - Things to do

The Mahabodhi Temple

This temple which was built of brick during the Gupta period is considered to be one of the most sacred sites in the world for it is built on the spot where it is believed Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, attained enlightenment. The gateway of the temple is adorned by an arch which was built by the great Indian emperor Ashoka in the 3rd Century BCE. The temple also features footprints of the holy one and it is adorned with images of Buddha. The temple complex also features Stupas which are mound like structures that contain Buddhist relics, gardens and lakes and The Great Buddha Statue" which was built in 1989, and unveiled by His Holiness Dalai Lama. This 64 feet tall Buddha Statue which features Buddha in a Dhayana Mudra pose(meditation pose) is built out of brick, red granite and sand stone. The statue took four years to build and was promoted by the Daijokyo Sect in Japan. The entire Mahabodhi temple complex has been endorsed as a UNESCO world heritage site.

The Bodhi Tree

Located within the temple complex is the famous Bodhi tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment. The original peepul tree(ficus religious) died long ago but the tree was replaced by saplings sourced from the Sri Mahd Bodhi tree in Sri Lanka which was itself cultivated from the saplings of the original Bodhi tree.

The Vishnupad Temple

This temple is another important temple of Gaya for it is believed to have been built over the footprint of the Hindu god, Lord Vishnu. The 40 cm long `footprint' of Vishnu is imprinted in solid rock and surrounded by a silver plated basin. This temple was built 1787, by Queen Ahilya Bai of Indore. The temple is situated at a distance of 3 km from Gaya city and is an important pilgrimage spot in Gaya, non-Hindus are not permitted to enter the temple.
