Mount Gambier Attractions - Things to do
Blue Lake is not only the water supply for the city, but a lake that mysteriously changes colour every year over a few days in November/December. From November through to March the Blue Lake is a startling turquoise blue, and from March onwards it is a more sedate shade of grey blue. The Blue Lake sits in an extinct volcano crater, with the diameter being about 5 km around. The Blue Lake has an average depth of 80 metres and is replenished by underground aquifers. There are many walking trails through the park and around the edge of the lake, but swimming and diving are not permitted in the Blue Lake. The elevator goes down the original dolomite well shaft where the water was taken initially. After a walk through a tunnel you will be able to view the lake's surface. You will hear about the science behind Mount Gambier's water supply and how the aquifer system works. You will also be able to hear about European settlement, Aboriginal legends, folklore, and Mount Gambier history. URL: http://www.aquifertours.com Cave Gardens is right in the centre of the city. The fountain in the park was built in 1884, and the rose gardens were planted in 1909. This sinkhole was the original water supply for the settlers. There is a suspended viewing platform offering amazing views into the cave where water run off from the city streets pours thorough. The viewing platform is accessed by a walk down into the cave. You can also visit these caves at night as they are well lit. The roof of the cave has fallen through and the remaining sinkhole has become the ideal setting for a sunken garden. This garden was beautified around 1886 and is permanently open, It is worth a visit at dusk when the possums come into lit gardens to feed. Steps leading down to the cave have a display documenting the history. There is also logging equipment on dislpay in the gardens. URL: http://www.wilmap.com.au/sa/mount_gambier/default.htm Engelbrecht Cave is on Jubilee Highway West and is a sink hole used by divers. This cave lies underneath the city and divers regularly explore this system of caves and have mapped the underground cave system. Daily guided tours to watch the divers entering the water and exploring the water filled caves under the city take 45 minutes . Learn how the caves were formed and how the underground water filters through the limestone to the Blue Lake. These caves were first explored in 1884. URL: http://www.mountgambiertourism.com.au The Old Courthouse Museum is well worth a visit and is owned buy the National Trust. This courthouse was opened in 1865 and was in use until 1975. Sometimes there are enactments of historic trials. The museum houses police and court records, historic photographs of the city, and other historic paraphernalia. The museum is on the way to the Blue Lake in Bay RD. Hotel Accomodation in Mount Gambier can be arranged at: http://www.hotelsaccommodation.com.au/Mount_Gambier-South_Australia/
