Fuzhou Attractions - Things to do
Hualin Temple (Hualin Si)
This temple is situated at the base of Pingshan Hill which is located in the northern half of Fuzhou. The temple was started during the reign of the Tang dynasty (618-907) but the main hall which is known as the Sumptuous Hall of the Great Hero (Daixong Baodian) was built during the reign of the Northern Song Dynasty (960 – 1279) . Today this temple is the oldest wooden construction in south China. The highlights of the temple are its 18 wooden pillars which are supported by arches.
Tomb of Lin Zexu
This tomb which is an important historical attraction in Fuzhou was built by Lin Zexu for his parents in 1826. Lin Zexu was famous Chinese commander who had confiscated and burned 20,000 cases of opium which the British had smuggled into China from India. This incident had caused the outbreak of the Opium Wars between the Chinese who were under the Qing Dynasty and the British Empire which lasted from 1839 t0 1842
This tomb site is situated at the foot of Jinshi Mountain which is located in Ma'an Village on the outskirts of Fuzhou. Today this burial ground has six tombs and includes the graves of Lin Zexu, his wife, brother and sister-in-law. The government of Fujian has carried out restoration work at the tomb site in recent years.
Minjiang Park
This verdant oasis is located on both sides of the Minjiang River that flows through the city of Fuzhou . Mingjiang Park has within it several smaller parks like Xihe Park, Jinjiang Park, Jinsha Park, Wanglong Park, Binfen Park, Minfeng Park and Minshui Park. Each of these smaller parks have their own unique attractions, for example Binfen Park is equipped with an open air theater which can accommodated about 2500 spectators and it also has a musical fountain where water shows set to music are often held.
SanFang qixiang
Located in the heart of downtown Fuzhou is an ancient quarter of the city which is composed of residential buildings that date back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. These buildings which are nearly 100 number bear are in a state of disrepair but sport exquisite wooden and stone carvings as they were once dwellings of the important people of Fuzhou. SanFang qixiang extends over three lanes and seven alleys and is definitely worth a visit as it provides a valuable insight into the history of Fuzhou.
