Faro Attractions - Things to do
Museu Municipal This museum features exhibits from throughout Faro’s history, including works depicting local legends by Carlos Filipe Porfirio, a famous local artist, ninth century domestic Islamic artefacts, and the third century ‘mosaic of the ocean’. The museum is housed in the sixteenth century Renaissance Convento de Nossa Senhora da Assuncao. http://www.cm-faro.pt/ Ihla da Barreta Known as the Ihla Deserta, this island is a beautiful and remote sandy strip just off the Faro coastline. It has an environmentally friendly restaurant that runs on solar power. Ferries leave for the island from the Arco da Porta Nova, and you can also take a boat tour through other parts of the Rio Formosa National Park. http://www.ilha-deserta.com/ Milreu Ruins Ten kilometres to the south of Faro, and near the village of Estoi, are the ruins of a grand roman villa. The Milreu Ruins, which date from the first century AD, provide a rare glimpse into Roman life. The ruins feature a gallery of columns around an inner courtyard, which was typical of a peristyle villa, as well as details such as under floor heating. http://www.visitalgarve.pt/
