Doha Attractions - Things to do
The Museum of Islamic Art
Doha’s newest attraction is its spectacular Museum of Islamic Art which is housed in a cubist building made of square and octagonal blocks that are stacked on top each other. This modern building which itself is a work of art was designed by renowned architect I.M.Pei and it opened its doors to public in November 2008. Entrance to the museum is free but you have to get an entry ticket from the ticket gallery though entrance to the special exhibitions is chargeable. The museum is located on the famed Doha Corniche and is close to the Dhow harbor. The museum has several galleries which showcase displays of manuscripts, textiles, ceramics and other works which have been collected over the last two decades which are magnificent exponents of Islamic arts. These artifacts have been sourced from countries like Spain, Egypt. Iran, Iraq, India etc.
The Corniche
Doha possesses a gorgeous cornichewhich is 7 km long and lines Doha Bay. The corniche has the port of Doha located within it and the sight of ships sailing into the turquoise waters of the bay present a spectacular sight. A picturesque promenade lines the cornice and it is the center for many recreational activities such as walking and rollerblading, swimming, surfing and snorkeling. Hotels and restaurants abound along the Corniche. The Al Bida Park is also located here and is a popular picnic spot.
The Qatar National Museum
The Qatar National Museum is located on the Corniche and is housed in a restored palace which was once inhabited by Sheikh Abdullah Bin Qassim Al Thani. The museum has an aquarium and a lagoon within its environs and its exhibits consist of the vestments, artifacts and jewelry. The museum is open to the public from 8am to noon and 4pm to7pm daily.
