Dhaka Attractions - Things to do
Mosques Dhaka is often referred to as a 'City of Mosques' and the city is populated by a few hundred mosques the most prominent of which are the Baitul-Mukarram mosque which is the national mosque, the Seven Domed mosque which dates back to the 17th century, the Star Mosque which was built in the 18th century and other mosques like the Chawkbazar Mosque and the Huseni Dalan Mosque. The Lalbagh Fort (Red Fort) This fort was built in 1678 AD by Prince Mohammad Azam who was the son of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The fort was the site of a bloody battle during the Indian Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 which is also known as the First War of Independence. Attractions located within the fort include the tomb of Pari baba, the mosque of the fort, the Darbar hall( the audience hall) and the Hammam of Nawab Shaista which is now a museum. National Poet's Graveyard The National Poet’s Graveyard is located within the grounds of the Dhaka University Mosque and features the grave of the revolutionary poet Kazi Nazrul Islam who died on the 29 August 1976 and was buried here. Bangabandhu Memorial Museum This museum is housed in the former home of the father of the nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who was a prominent Bengali politician. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who headed the political party known as the Awami League was the founding leader of the People's Republic of Bangladesh . He served as the first President of Bangladesh who went on to became the Prime Minister as well, though after only seven months in office he was assassinated by a group of army officers along with most of his family members. His home has now been converted into a museum which contains a collection of personal effects and photographs. Jatiyo Sriti Soudho This monument is also known as the National Martyrs' Memorial was built to honor the valor and sacrifice of those people who were killed during the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971. The monument is located in Savar which is located at a distance of about 35km north west of Dhaka. The Shaheed Minar The Shaheed Minar is a national monument which was built to commemorate the demonstrators who were killed during the Language Movement demonstrations of 1952. This massacre took place on February 21, 1952 when many students and political activists were killed by the Western Pakistani police forces. These demonstrators were demanding equal status for the Bangla language. The first make-shift memorial erected by the students was destroyed by the Pakistani police and when the language movement achieved its goal of acquiring equal status for the Bangla language, the Shaheed Minar was designed and built by Hamidur Rahman, a Bangladeshi sculptor.
