Cork Attractions - Things to do
Blarney Castle as it can be seen today was built in 1446 by Dermot McCarthy, King of Munster, although there had been two earlier castles built on the same site. One of the main attractions of the castle is the Blarney Stone, found at the top of the tower. Its exact origin is not known, although there are plenty of legends, but it is known as the Stone of Eloquence as anyone that kisses the stone is thought to gain the gift of eloquence. http://www.blarneycastle.ie/ Fota Wildlife Park Fota Wildlife Park is located ten kilometres east of Cork city and was opened in 1983 aa a joint project between the Zoological Society of Ireland and University College Cork. The park is home to many endangered species including the Black & White Ruffed Lemur, the European Bison, the Lion-tailed Macaque, and the Scimitar-horned Oryx, which is now extinct in the wild. http://www.fotawildlife.ie/ Model Railway Village Located in Clonakilty, West Cork, the model railway village is a fun excursion for adults and children alike. All the models and figurines are hand made at a scale of 1:24 and depict the old West Cork Railway of the 1940s on a busy market day. Take a break in the tea room, set on an authentic train carriage, with a view over Clonakilty. http://www.modelvillage.ie/
