Cobar Attractions - Things to do

The Great Cobar Open Cut was created over 100 years ago by men employed in the back breaking job of digging the huge hole. They used picks, shoves, horse and cart to remove the rock from the quarry. At its deepest, the main hole is 150 metres and is of a similar depth as the Great Cobar Mine. Many locals have enjoyed a swim during the very hot Summer days and it has been the site of many kids learning how to swim over the decades.

The former administration building first built in 1910 of the Great Cobar Copper Mine houses The Great Cobar Heritage Centre. Discover the hand stencilling on cave rocks by early Aboriginals at Mount Grenfell Historical Site. Created by blowing or spraying mouthfuls of pigment using the hand as a template, one stencil shows a hand print minus the top joints and the middle finger missing. Imagine what the story is behind these pictures. Muse on the art forms showing animated stick figures dancing, hunting or conducting ceremonial rites. The age of this art site is hard to determine as the pictures are of myth or tradition and have changed over time. Enjoy the 5 kilometre Ngiyambaa walk and view the breathtaking scenery of the region.
