Chongqing Attractions - Things to do

The Yangtze River Cruise

Most tourists enjoy taking the Yangtze River cruise in Chongqing. These cruises usually depart from the Chaotianmen Dock and sail around the peninsula as they pass under both the Yangziu and Jialing bridges. Other river cruises sail on the Danging River and offer views of the gorgeous scenery that abounds around the Three Gorges Dam project, the Fengdu Ghost City and other attractions. Many tours operators in Chongqing offer these river cruises.

The Dazu Rock Carvings

The Dazu rock carvings which have now been endorsed as a UNESCO World Heritage site adorn the steep hillsides of the Dazu area. These carvings which cover both religious and secular subject matters were created between the 9th and 13th centuries and provide a valuable insight into the life of the Chinese people during those times. These carvings were started during the rule of the Tang Dynasty and continued under the rule of the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Ci Qi Kuo

Fourteen kilometers to the west of Chongqing lies the ancient village of Ci Qi Kou which is also known as the Porcelain Village. This village is situated on the banks of the Jialing River and has a history which can be traced back to over 1700 years. The village was especially famous during the Ming and Qing Dynasties ( 1368-1911) when it was renowned for its production of fine Chinese porcelain. The vases and other products which were produced here during these times are now considered to be collectibles as they fetch vast sums of money at auctions. The village has always been an important center of trade and it is essentially made up twelve lanes which are paved with large flag stones. These lanes are lined with numerous Chinese shop houses which date back to the Ming and Qing dynasties artists’ studios and tea houses. This attraction is a must visit on any trip to Chongqing for here you get a chance to observe ancient Chinese arts and crafts like Shu embroidery and silk reeling.
