Yuelu Academy
 
One of Changsha’s major attractions is its Yuelu Academy which is located at the foot of the scenic Mt. Yuelu which is situated on the west bank of the Xiangjiang River. This university was established in 976 under Song Dynasty during the reign of Emperor Kaibao. This institution was one of the most respected academies of learning which hosted eminent Confucian scholars like Zhu Xi and Zhang Shi. The academy was converted into a university in 1903 and was eventually renamed as the Hunan University in 1926. The Yuelu Academy is the only ancient Chinese academy of classical learning that has evolved into a modern institution of higher learning.
 
Mawangdui Han Tomb
 
The other major attraction in Changsha is the well preserved mummified remains of a Western Han Dynasty Woman which was excavated from the archaeological site of the Mawangdui Han Tombs. This site threw up the tombs of three people who belonged to the western Han Dynasty and these tombs are believed to have belonged to the first Marquis of Dai, his wife, and a male who is believed to be their son. The woman’s tomb is the best preserved of all the three. The Mawangdui site was excavated from 1972-1974 and it unearthed numerous artifacts like silk products, lacquer wear, banners, weapons, herbs and utensils which are today on display at the Hunan Provincial museum.
 
Long Island (Juzi Zhou)
 
Long Island (Juzi Zhou) is an island located in the midst of the Xiang River. It is believed that Chairman Mao Zedong studied at the No.1 Normal School which was located on the island. Today the island which is also known as Orange Isle has a verdant park which sports a marble monument that has Mao’s inscriptions carved on it. This is a popular tourist site in the city of Changsha.
