Casablanca Attractions - Things to do
Hassan II Mosque This impressive feat of architectural engineering is the third largest mosque in the world. It was built in 1993 to commemorate the sixtieth birthday of the former king, and is located to the northwest of the medina. The mosque cost over half a billion dollars to build, and was designed by Michel Pinseau, holding up to 25,000 worshippers. The minaret is the tallest in the world at over two hundred metres, and issues the daily calls to prayer whilst spraying laser beams across the sky towards Mecca. Hour long tours of the mosque can be taken, but visitors must dress modestly and remove their shoes. http://www.visitmorocco.com Jewish Museum of Casablanca There are very few museums in Casablanca, and the Jewish Museum is one of the more significant being the only Jewish museum in the Islamic world. Exhibits include photographs, clothing, ceremonial items, and documents that illustrate the influence of the once thriving Jewish community on Casablanca and contemporary Moroccan society in general. The museum is located in the suburb of Oasis, in a villa surrounded by beautiful gardens. http://rickgold.home.mindspring.com/museum_of_moroccan_judaism.htm Hammam No trip to Morocco would be complete without trying out a traditional Hammam. The clean and modern Hammam Ziani is located on Rue Abou Rakrak, and offers all the traditional elements of a Hammam including a steam room, gommage (being scrubbed by an attendant), massage, and Jacuzzi. The times are usually set so that men and women don’t use the Hammam together.
