The Broome Bird Observatory is located on the shores of Roebuck Bay only 25 kilometres east of Broome. Dedicated to the conservation of migratory shorebirds, they Observatory fosters study, public education and is allied with conservation organisations both local and world wide. Roebuck Bay has one of the largest diversity of shorebird species with over 150,000 birds visiting each year. Established in 1988 by Birds Australia, all lovers of nature will want to visit. Displays provide a step back in time into the history and culture of Broome. Memorabilia, Aboriginal artefacts, Broome’s One Day War, Cyclones, Domestic Life in Broome and the Pearling History are just a few of the exhibitions that will enthral you. Housed in a building built in the late 1890’s, that later became the general store for Newman Goldstein & Co. The store stocked the fleet of 22 luggers, 2 schooners and a steam launch belonging to Newman Goldstein & Co. Two tours daily are available to discover the real story behind Broome, the infamous pearling town. The restoration of two wooden luggers from the late 1800s are on display. Archival movie footage from the 1950s shows the hardships they encountered in the dark depths.
