Bologna Attractions - Things to do
Basilica di San Pietro Originally planned to be grander even that St. Peter’s in Rome, the current Basilica di San Pietro is only about a fifth of its intended size. Work began in 1390, and continued for centuries, but eventually building was abandoned when funds were redirected to the city’s university. The cathedral features the Cappella Bolognini, with Giovanni di Modena’s controversial painting of Paradise and Hell. http://www.comune.bologna.it/ Chiesa di Santo Stefano Santo Stefano is a series of delightful churches, courtyards, cloisters and chapels that are all linked by a triangular piazza of the same name. It includes the oldest church in Bologna which dates back to the fifth century, although rebuilding work was carried out in the eleventh and thirteenth centuries. The city’s patron saint Pietro is buried in the Santo Sepolcro, and the Cortile di Pilato houses a baptismal font which is said to be the one in which Pontius Pilate washed his hands of Christ. http://www.bologna.chiesacattolica.it/ MAMbo Museo d’Arte Moderne A former bakery, this free museum of modern art opened its doors in May 2007, displaying largely temporary exhibitions. However some of the permanent exhibits include paintings by max Ernst, Pollock, and local artist Giorgio Morandi that make up a collection of works acquired by Francesco Archangeli. http://www.galleriadartemoderna.bo.it/
