Beirut Attractions - Things to do
Beirut National Museum Lebanon’s main museum is located directly on the Green Line, which divided the Christians and Muslims of Beirut during the war, and contains exhibits and artefacts from throughout Lebanese history. These range from the second millennium BC right through to the Byzantine and Mamluk civilisations. Opening hours are 9am to 5pm daily, except Monday and public holidays, and labels are in English, Arabic and French. Specialist exhibits include colossi, sarcophagi and mosaics. http://www.beirutnationalmuseum.com/ Solidere area This fashionable part of downtown Beirut has been the centre of the restoration work, and is now a place filled with stunning architecture, cosy cafes and unique craft shops. Stroll along the cobblestone streets, eat at one of over seventy restaurants, or simply take in the Place d’Etoile and Clock Tower, various Roman ruins, numerous mosques and churches, or the National Parliament Building. http://solidere-online.com/thecity/enjoyover.html Hope of Peace A 5000 ton sculpture featuring real military equipment such as tanks and artillery, squashed between layers of concrete and sandbags serves as a reminder of the recent conflict in Lebanon and is a symbol of continued peace. The ten storey monument, created by Armand Fernandez is located outside the Ministry of Defence building on the outskirts of Beirut.
