The Australian Workers Heritage Centre was opened in 1991 and is described by many as the unsung wonder of the outback. It is located in the grounds of the old Barcaldine State School. As custodians of working Australians, the Heritage Centre preserves the stories and achievements of railway workers, farmers, blacksmiths, factory workers, mothers, nurses, teachers and nuns from the region. With the weary traveller, this outback oasis with landscaped gardens and shady trees around a billabong give a moment to relax and enjoy. The tour shows the history of Aboriginal and European contact and is one of the Outback’s best kept secrets. Located in the former old National Bank that was built in 1906, a visit to the museum is family entertainment.
