Bangalore Attractions - Things to do

The Bangalore Palace

Bangalore is home to several magnificent buildings like the Bangalore Palace which was built by Rev. Garrett, who was the first Principal of the Central High School in Bangalore, The construction of the palace began in 1862 and in 1884 the palace was bought by the Maharaja of Mysore, Chamaraja Wodeyar. The Palace is built in the Tudor style and it accordingly sports turreted parapets, fortified towers and arches. The Palace is well known for its exquisite woodwork, its gorgeous stained glass that adorns its Darbar Hall( reception hall) as well as its art gallery which houses several paintings that were created by the renowned Indian artist, Raja Ravi Verma.

The Bull Temple

The Bull Temple which is located in an area of Bangalore known as Basavanagudi is a South Indian temple which is famous for its massive statue of a bull which has been carved out of a single boulder. This bull is believed to be the bull, Nandi which was the Hindu god Shiva’s vehicle. The legend associated with this temple states that the temple was built to appease a marauding bull that used to destroy the groundnut crops that were cultivated in the area. It is for this reason that every year the farmers of the region offer their first crop of groundnut to the bull of Bull temple. The farmers also hold a Groundnut fair known as Kadalekayi Parishe in honor of the bull near the temple premises every year. This fair is typically held during the months of November and December.

Cubbon Park.

Cubbon Parkis a 300 acre park which is located in the heart of Bangalore city. This park was created over a hundred years ago by Sri John Meade who was then the acting Commissioner of Mysore. The park is a lush verdant oasis in the midst of the city which contains more than 96 species of plants and trees as well as several official buildings.
