Manado Flights Guide

Manado, IndonesiaManado is the capital of Indonesia's North Sulawesi province. Located on the Bay of Manado and surrounded by mountains, Manado is rarely regarded as an attraction itself. Most travelers instead use this city as stop-over point on the way to diving and snorkeling at nearby Bunaken National Park. This city is home to warm-hearted locals, and as a common base for tourists, it's well-served with plenty of decent hotels and a variety of places to eat.

The easiest way to get around is by ojek/ompreng moped taxis, or by mikrolets, which are blue mini buses that can be hailed from the side of the street. Manado is home to some modern shopping complexes, particularly along Piere Tendean Boulevard, including Mega Mall, the Manado Town Square, and the Boulevard. At the center of the town's markets, shops, and fish stalls, you'll find the harbour and Pasar 45 square.

While Indonesia is mostly Muslim, Manado is primarily a Christian city, home to some of the most influential churches in the province. Many of these churches can be found along Sam Ratulangi Street. Visible from most parts of the city is Manado's massive white stone Jesus, which is second only to the statue in Rio de Janeiro as the largest in the world. Another well-known attraction is Ban Hin Klong Temple, a 300-year-old temple built during the Qing dynasty. Found in Chinatown, this temple is particularly popular during the Chinese New Year celebration. Head into the countryside to see traditional wooden Minahasa houses, raised from the ground and featuring distinctive outside staircases.

Manado is also famous in Indonesia as a destination for food tourism. Manadonese food is extremely spicy, and relies on lemon and herbs for flavouring. The locals are known for their ability to eat pretty much anything, including cat, rat, bat, and dog meat. Typical local dishes include ikan mas bakar rica, which is grilled spicy fish, as well as yam rica-rica, which is grilled chicken topped with red chili-and-onion paste. Check out the dining options along Piere Tendean Boulevard, or try tinutuan or bubur manado on Wakeke Street.
