Wisconsin's state capital, Madison, boasts a lot of superlatives: it's been named America's most walkable city, best road-biking city, most vegetarian-friendly, and most friendly city in general. Bordering Mendota and Monona Lakes, this college town is home to a strong foodie scene, vibrant theatre community, cheap entertainment, and great shopping, including plenty of bookstores and cool boutiques. Madison is home to a creative, well-educated population of professionals, students, families and free-thinkers.
The city has a decent bus system, although if you're planning to extend your travels to the pretty countryside surrounding the city, renting a car is a better option. Wander along Memorial Union Terrace and enjoy the views over Lake Mendota, or rent a boat for the afternoon. Check out the Roman-Renaissance-style State Capitol, which was built in 1912, and features beautiful murals and handmade furniture in its interior. Capitol Square hosts many enjoyable events throughout the year, including several farmers' markets and folk festivals. Chazen Museum of Art features a great collection of prints, photographs, paintings and sculptures, along with regularly changing special exhibitions by local artists. One of the city's most popular attractions, Olbrich Botanical Garden is home to sixteen free outdoor gardens, as well as a conservatory with over 650 species of exotic plants. There's also Henry Vilas Zoo, a free zoo in Vilas Park, which, in addition to animals, offers a zoo train, carousel, and children's play area.
Madison has the highest restaurants per capita in the US, which means there's something to please virtually every kind of eater. The city perpetuates its “supper club” traditions, with a number of German-inspired eateries serving American food during the day, and then transitioning into a more bar-style environment at night. Check out the coffee shops, cosmopolitan restaurants, bookstores, and art galleries on State Street; or walk up bohemian Willy St. and browse through co-ops, head shops, and locally-sourced restaurants. Some of the best shopping deals can be found on East Johnson Street, a bourgeoning neighbourhood that is home to affordable, yet high-quality shops and cafes.
