Slovenia's capital city of Ljubljana is a delightfully charming and small city, perfect for a weekend getaway surrounded by gorgeous buildings and an abundance of museums, galleries, and artists at work. It has a very special character and a lovely atmosphere.
Joze Pucnik Airport operates flights to and from a variety of European destinations. Trains and buses also connect the city to all other major Slovenian destinations and a wide selection of European cities. The city centre is perfect for exploring by foot, and a hire car is a good way to get to outlying areas. Taxis and city buses are also available.
The Old Town is an attractive part of the city between the river and Castle Hill. It has two lovely squares, the City Hall, a nice fountain, and a large number of medieval buildings that are home today to cafes, restaurants, and shops.
Ljubljana has a number of nice bridges that span the river. Tromostovje is actually three bridges next to each other. The Dragon Bridge is protected by four imposing dragon statues.
The Slovenian Parliament Building is interesting and unusual. The walls are decorated with images of people both working and enjoying free time activities. What makes these artistic images even more fascinating though is that fact that the subjects are naked!
Other things to do in the city include seeing the remains of the old Roman walls, visiting Ljubljana Castle, absorbing the arty, Boho, and alternative culture at Metelkova, relaxing at Tivoli Park, and standing in a historically important spot at the Square of the Republic. This Square was where droves of people assembled to hear Slovenia declare its independence from the Yugoslav Federation.
You can find high class restaurants and funky little cafes. As well as traditional food, you can enjoy a selection of global cuisine too. There are numerous places to drink and a good selection of discos.
