Lihue is located on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, a lush paradise known for its incredible hiking, kayaking and other outdoor pursuits. Lihue is the island's commercial and transportation centre, home to Kauai's main airport and Nawiliwili Habor, which is the island's main commercial shipping port.
The city offers a local bus system, and although its route is not extensive, it can be an interesting cultural experience. One of the best ways to explore Lihue and the surround island is by rental car, which allows you to visit some of the island's remote, beautiful sites. Lihue may only be viewed as a transit point for most visitors, but it has its own lovely beaches and scenic natural sites to explore. Pretty Kalapaki Beach is one of Kauai's most popular beaches, with excellent swimming, fishing, surfing, and picnicking. Nearby Ninini Beach is home to two sandy coves, and surrounded by dramatic mountain views. The beach is a good spot for swimming and snorkeling, and its lighthouse has been operating since the 19th-century.
Head a little north of Lihue, and spend some time gazing at beautiful 80-foot-high Wailua Falls, located at the south end of the Wailua River. Alekoko Menehune Fishpond is another popular Lihue area attraction. This 1000-year-old aquaculture reservoir was originally built to catch fish, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Be sure to check out Kilohana, a historic plantation estate that was once home to one of the island's wealthiest families. The Kauai Museum is another well-known historical attraction in Lihue, which features an impression collection of work by multi-cultural artists and sculptures, along with some interesting exhibits on the formation of the Hawaiian Islands. Be sure to visit the Grove Farm Homestead Museum, which is set on the site of one of the island's earliest sugar plantations. This museum showcases life during the major plantation era, as well as how sugar plantations shaped the history of the island.
You'll find a wide range of restaurants in Lihue, from Chinese and Thai, to Italian and Mexican. There are plenty of low-key local eateries, where mainly meat and rice dishes are available. Be sure to try poke, which is pieces of raw tuna or octopus seasoned with sesame oil, soy sauce, onions and pickled seaweed. For souvenirs, check out the Country Store or the Kauai Museum for local art and crafts.
