Kuching is the largest city in the Malaysian state of Sarawak. Sarawak is situated on the large island of Borneo, quite a long way from the Malaysian Peninsula. The culture is therefore very different to that on the mainland. Kuching is compact enough for you to easily explore it by foot, yet large enough to hold a vast array of attractions to pique all interests. It offers a tantalizing combination of nature, culture, history, and the famous heritage and legacies of the fearsome headhunting tribes. The best times to visit the multicultural city are between the months of March and October.
Most people enter the city via Kuching International Airport. Flights operate to other cities on Borneo and in Malaysia, as well as to Singapore, Hong Kong, and a handful of other Asian cities. Boats connect Kuching and Sibu. Buses travel to other parts of Sarawak, as well as to the border areas with Brunei and Indonesian Borneo, sometimes continuing over the border. The city centre and outlying areas are served by various bus services. Other means of transport include shuttle vans, taxis, water taxis, rental cars, and bicycles. You can easily and comfortably walk around the city centre.
Kuching City Mosque is a striking building, with very ornate designs. Another city mosque is the Masjid Jamek. Tua Pek Kong Temple is a dazzling Chinese Temple, and is the oldest such temple in Kuching. The Astana is a glorious palacial building.
Medan Raya Complex is an ideal spot to enjoy the lovely lake and park. Taman Budaya is another place to go jogging and walking. Friendship Garden seals the friendship between China and Malaysia.
Sarawak has an abundance of great museums, including the Sarawak Museum, Dewan Tun Abdul Razak, the Chinese History Museum, the Sarawak Islamic Museum, the Cat Museum, and the Police Museum within the old Fort Margherita.
Visit the Sarawak Cultural Village to see traditional dancing, hear traditional music, and learn how to play a traditional musical instrument.
Children will especially enjoy the planetarium, and the crocodile farm.
For great panoramic views of the city ride to the top of the tower at the Kuching Civic Centre.
Don't miss visiting the Main Bazaar, where a tangle of lively streets and a vast array of products await. The Sunday Market offers more shopping mayhem.
