King Island is a fairly large island situated in Bass Strait. It is part of the Australian state of Tasmania, and is located almost half way between the main island of Tasmania and the mainland state of Victoria. Three smaller islands encircle King Island; Christmas Island, New Year Island, and Councillor Island.
The waters surrounding the island have seen an unfortunately large number of shipwrecks, with tremendous loss of lives. Diving to various wreck sites is a popular activity.
The island's main areas are Currie Island, Grassy, and Naracoopa. Currie is the largest area, and is also the administrative centre. Grassy offers a number of facilities and attractions for tourists. These include an art gallery, a free BBQ area, and the port area. Near to the port there is a penguin rookery, and many people like to go and watch the penguins in their natural environment. Platypus can also be seen at the Upper Grassy Dam.
Naracoopa is known for the nice beach and the fishing jetty. It has several accommodation options and places to eat and drink. You can enjoy some al fresco cooking and dining at the BBQ area.
Other places of interest on King Island include Cape Wickham Lighthouse and the Calcified Forest.
Whilst visiting King Island, try some of the seafood for which the island is known, and delicious locally produced dairy products.
The most common way to get to King Island is via Currie Airport. Flights are available to and from Melbourne and the main island of Tasmania. Rental cars and bikes are the best way to get around. There is no public transport on the island.
