Kiev is Ukraine's capital city. It is also the country's largest city. It sits alongside the Dnieper River. The city presents a very mixed image, somewhere between a Russian destination and a European city. Having been ruled by various civilisations and nationalities, and having today a diverse population, it is a very multi cultural city. Whilst the vast majority of inhabitants are Ukrainian, and the second largest number of residents are Russian, there are also Poles, Romanians, Tatars, Armenians, Georgians, Balarussians, Jews, and others living in the city. Kiev is one of the oldest cities in Europe, and thus is steeped in lots of history. The overall atmosphere of Kiev is warm and welcoming.
A main city sight is the cave monastery of Kiev Pechersk Lavra. It is one of Ukraine's oldest and most important monasteries, dating back to 1077. The low and narrow caves provide a wonderfully spiritual insight into the lives of hermit monks. You can also see mummified monk corpses! Another important and beautiful religious building is the grand and historic St Sophia's Cathedral. It contains wonderfully ornate mosaics and frescoes, a bell tower, a museum, and great architecture.
Of Kiev's museums, some of the best include the moving Chernobyl Museum, the interesting Open Air Museum of Folk Architecture and Rural Life, and One Street Museum.
Other places of interest are St Michael's Monastery, the Motherland Statue, Babyn Yar, Mariyinsky Palace, Independence Square, and the Golden Gate of Kiev. You can take the old funicular from Podil to the upper city and enjoy wonderful scenic views.
You will have no problems finding somewhere to eat or drink in Kiev, and the city enjoys a fairly active night life.
Within Kiev, the metro is reliable, clean, convenient, and hassle free. There are various bus routes around the city and numerous taxis.
A major gateway into the city is Boryspil Airport, which serves a variety of domestic and international destinations. Train services connect Kiev to other parts of the country, as well as places in Russia, Eastern Europe, and Central Europe. The city is also well connected by bus.
