Yangon, formerly known as Rangoon as used to be the capital of Myanmar until November 2005 when Napyidaw became the capital. The city has been influenced by a number of cultures and this is evident in its varying architecture. Local folklore says that the Shwedagon Pagoda was built around the time of Gautama Buddha in the area today represents modern Yangon. Myanmar is currently ruled by a military junta. Despite the relocation of the capital, Yangon is still the largest city in Myanmar with a population of 4 million. It is also the heart of all commercial activity. The majority of the population in Yangon is Burman. There are large Indian, south Asian and Indian communities as well. The main language is Burmese though English is widely spoken by the educated class. Yangon experiences warm weather throughout the year due to its equatorial monsoonal climate. Temperatures average 30 degrees Celsius all through the year. Rainfall is heaviest in October and November.
