Xiamen Holidays Overview
Xiamen is city in China with sub provincial level status. It is located in Fujian Province on the eastern coast of southern China. It is one of the earliest special economic zones created by China. It is amongst the top ten ports in China and largest base for the supply of raw tungsten materials used in the manufacture of electricity bulbs. Xiamen also holds the distinction of being the largest manufacturer of sunglasses in the world. It was also recently voted to be China’s cleanest city. It was the port first used by the Portuguese for trade in the 14th century. Xiamen was also one of the first ports opened up to foreign trade by the 1842 Treaty of Nanjing. Xiamen currently gets a lot of investment capital from Hong Kong. Its main industries are telecommunications, tanning, textiles, fishing and ship building. Xiamen has a population of 2.5 million people and is regarded as one of China’s best cities to live in after Shanghai. The local language is known as Amoy, a dialect of the Southern Chinese Min. The weather is humid and sub tropical. The summer is from May to October when temperatures average 25 degrees Celsius. Rainfall is also greatest during this time.

Direct flights to Xiamen from Australian cities are not currently available. However, a number of airlines operate scheduled direct flights to Guangzhou. The main airline is China Southern while Sydney and Melbourne are the major departure airports. The average direct flight time from Sydney to Guangzhou is 9 hours.
