Whangarei Holidays Overview
The city of Whangerei is 160 km away from Auckland and is a coastal region with more than 100 bays and beaches. The population of Whangerei is almost 75 000 and is the largest urban centre north of Auckland. One distinctive land mark of the area are the handmade stone walls that are everywhere, which are an end result of volcanic activity producing plenty of rocks.
Maori settlements have been found in the area that date back to 1200. Although there were Europeans living in the Whangerei region by 1845, due to the Land Wars, this area wasn't really popular with Europeans until the 1870s. The flat land in the region was used as farming. Today the produce grown in the region includes traditional vegetables and subtropical fruits. Whangerei's economy is based on tourism, forestry, horticulture, pastoral farming, along with boat building. Whangerei is famous for having more artisans per capita than any other New Zealand region, and this is reflected in the prolific arts and culture through the city.
There are many bush and coastal walks in the area. Holiday makers are spoilt for a choice of beach and water activities.

Whangerei's Endless Summer Festival is held in February and March, and involves endless entertainment and endless adventure. Events on the programme include a family picnic at the Whangeri Quarry Gardens, the Beach 2 Basin Fun Run and Walk, or the Northland Mountain Bike Challenge. There is also an Opera in the Garden performance, open air cinemas, kids triathlon, fishing competitions, and rodeo championships. Something for everybody.
