Wanganui Holidays Overview
Wanganui is located on New Zealand's North Island, on the west coast, and lies on the Whanganui River. Wanganui is 195 km from Wellington, or just under 3 hours to drive, and 450 km from Auckland, or a 6 1/2 hour drive. Europeans started settling in Wanganui in about 1840 after the New Zealand company started settling there. The Wanganui region has a very strong Maori history as well who used both the river and fertile lands. The Whanganui River is the longest navigable inland waterway in New Zealand and has been an important river trading route in both Maori and European history. This river city has beautiful gardens, parks, and renovated historic buildings. There is plenty of both Maori and European culture and history on display. There are many activities for the holiday maker in Wanganui including many river activities, museums, galleries, and walks. The Whanganui National Park is a beautiful back drop with exotic wildlife and pristine plant life.
