Wanaka Holidays Overview
Wanaka town is situated on Lake Wanaka and is in the Central Otago region of New Zealand's South Island. Wanaka is 120 km north west of Queenstown, or a 1 hour drive, and a 5 hour drive from Christchurch. Wanaka is especially famous for its alpine scenery set against the stunning backdrop of Lake Wanaka. Wanaka is a popular destination in autumn when the change in colour of all the foliage and leaves makes for picture postcard scenery. Wanaka is also a popular destination for photographers. The first European to see the lake is thought to be Nathaniel Chalmers in 1853. In 1857 and 1858 settlers started arrived in the area. Wanaka was originally known as Pembroke and it was not until 1940 that it was renamed Wanaka. Summer holiday tourists visiting Wanaka can participate in water activities such as swimming, sailing, or trout fishing. Mount Aspiring National Park has world famous hiking trails. There are many galleries and museums for those intersted in culture and heritage.
