Walgett Holidays Overview
Walgett lies 705 km North of Sydney, in New South Wales, and is considered to be a stepping stone for the famous opal mining towns of Lightning Ridge, Sheepyard, Glengarry and Garwin. Walgett lies on the Namoi River, near the junction of the Barwon River and has a population of roughly 2000. Walgett's prime industry includes cotton, wool, sheep, and wheat. Walgett is a true agricultural country town. Walgett was initially settled by squatters and pastoralists in the 1850's. In the late 1860's and 1870's, Walgett was a river port for paddle steamers. The riverside location of Walgett makes it a popular location for fishermen in search of Yellowbelly and Murray Cod. Other activities include tennis, bowls, golf, and swimming.
