Port Vila Holidays Overview
Port Vila is the capital of Vanuatu, once known as the New Hebrides, in the South Pacific. Vanuatu is a 2 1/2 hour flight from Brisbane and a 3 1/2 hour flight from Sydney. Vanuatu is part of a coral archipelago formed by a series of earthquakes. Port Vila is located on the southern coast of the island of Efate. Vanuatu has an interior of lush rainforest, surrounded by beautiful turquoise coastal waters with coral reefs and fish. The Melanesian people have lived in this region for thousands of years. The first Europeans arrived in 1606. The French arrived in the 19th century and from 1887 onwards both the French and British ruled jointly. The country gained independence in 1980 and changed the name to Vanuatu. Port Vila was an Australian and American airbase during WW11. Tourism, fishing and agriculture are the main industries today. The locals of Vanuatu have a variety of ancestry and cultures including Melanesian, Polynesian, Chinese, British, and French. Activities in Vila include water sports such as snorkelling, scuba diving, swimming, fishing, including game and reef, canoeing, and sailing. Golf, shopping, dining, bush walking, horse riding, museums and galleries are other tourist options. There are also island cruises and scenic flights.
