Vancouver Holidays Overview
Victoria is located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island off the Pacific Coast of Canada. It is the capital of the province of Vancouver. It is reached by ferry, private boats, helicopter or seaplane. The British Columbia Ferry departs from the city of Vancouver. Victoria is known as the Garden City due to its expansive green spaces. More than 3.5 million tourists visit here annually, contributing as the main force in the local economy. The downtown is filled with theaters, restaurants and clubs. The climate is temperate. In the winter, it rarely drops below 3.6 degrees Celsius nor does the temperature rise above 30 degrees in the summer. Eucalyptus, Banana and palm trees are found in the city gardens, a rarity for the Pacific Northwest. The sunny, generally warm climate prevails most of the year. Nevertheless, large snowfalls are typical in December. Prior to an English trading post bringing the first European inhabitants, the area had been inhabited by several aboriginal peoples. In 1849, the Crown’s colony was first established here, taking its name from Queen Victoria. A decade later gold was discovered and the population boomed. Today, roughly 80,000 people inhabit the city; a total of 330,000 reside in the region consisting of 13 municipalities. The scenery and almost year round golf play attract retirees making this the retirement capital of Canada. The 30.35-hectare Beacon Hill Park at the city center is home to a zoo, open fields, out door concerts as well as cricket matches which have been played here since the 19th century.
