Teesside Holidays Overview
Teesside was originally a county borough in North East England that was abolished in 1974. However, the name is still used to describe the area on the River Tees that includes the towns of Stockton-on-Tees, Redcar, Billingham, and the main town of Middlesbrough. The name is still used by various institutions such as the Teesside University. Teesside is still an important area for heavy industry, although this has declined in the last few years. The people of Teesside are often known as ‘smoggies’ because of the supposed industrial smog. The term was initially derogatory but many inhabitants of Teesside now proudly use it to describe themselves. Middlesbrough is known as the commercial mecca of the Tees Valley, has plenty of shops, boutiques, restaurants, bars and clubs, as well as a rich heritage shown by its historic buildings. The cultural scene in Middlesbrough is on the up, with the opening of the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art. The town is set to improve further with the development of the waterfront.
