Tauranga Holidays Overview
Tauranga is located on the Bay of Plenty on the North Island of New Zealand and has a population of about 116 000. Due to its mild weather the region of Tauranga is extremely popular with retirees. The Port of Tauranga is the largest port in New Zealand. The earliest known inhabitants in this region were the Maori tribes in the 12th Century. The first Europeans to arrive were flax traders in the 1830s. From 1840-1863 there was a Catholic mission, but the Land Wars resulted in it being closed down. Tauranga is considered a main centre for business, horticultural science, fashion, culture, entertainment and education. The coastal beaches around Tauranga make this an extremely popular summer destination and offers the holiday maker fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and swimming with dolphins. National parks and glow worms are also popular tourist attractions.
