Taupo Holidays Overview
The town of Taupo is located on the famous Lake Taupo, which is New Zealand's largest lake. It is 380 km from Wellington, or a 5 hour drive, and 206 km from Auckland, or a 3 hour 30 minute drive. Taupo lies at the outlet of Lake Taupo on the northern side, where the lake drains into the Waikato River. Taupo town has magnificent views over the lake and the volcanic mountains in Tongariro National Park.
This tourist town offers many water activities including paragliding, jet boating, sky diving, kayaking, rafting, and fishing. Taupo is located in a geothermal and volcanic activity region, and Mount Tauhara, a volcanic mountain, is only 6 km away.
There are many other activities for the visitor to Taupo to enjoy including hot springs and baths, museums and art galleries, scenic flights over the lake, horse riding, skiing, and visiting the geothermal power station.

Wattyl Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge started in 1977 with 26 cyclists and is now the premier cycling event of New Zealand. Now the event attracts more than 10 000 riders annually. There are many events to select from including solo, relay and endurance. There are also mountain bike and road events. This event caters for riders of all levels, and is mainly non-competitive, but there are 3 race options for elite cyclists. This event is held in November.

Ironman New Zealand is held in March each year and is the oldest international ironman competition in the world. More than 38 countries participate in this event. Competitors swim in Lake Taupo, ride their bikes through the streets, and then run through the town to complete the event. Conditions are considered very athlete friendly and safe, with very clean water to swim in and quiet streets to cycle on.

FLIGHTS There are no direct flights from Taupo to any city in Australia. Air New Zealand services Taupo airport and from there flights can be caught to Auckland and Christchurch and then on to Australia from there.
