Taipei Holidays Overview
Taipei is the largest city of the autonomous Taiwan. It is located in northern Taiwan on the Danshui River. It is the political, economic and cultural centre of Taiwan. It has served as the unrecognized capital of the Republic of China (ROC) since the end of the Chinese Civil War. It is a major industrial area and a force in the world economy. Major industrial sectors can be found in textiles, electronics, electrical appliances and equipment as well as shipbuilding.
It was occupied and annexed by Japan in 1895 after the Sino Japanese War. It was then taken over after Japan’s crushing defeat during the second world war. When the Kuomintang was defeated by communist forces during the Chinese civil war, General Chiang Kai-shek made Taipei the capital of the Republic of China.
The climate is humid and subtropical. There are occasional typhoons during summer that runs from May to October.

Taipei holds many annual festivals and events. One of the most popular is the lantern festival held every on the 15th day of the 1st month of the lunar year. During this time thousands of sky lanterns are cast into the sky. It officially brings to an end the Chinese new year.
