Stewart Island Holidays Overview
Stewart Island lies 30 km south off the New Zealand's Southern Island. Stewart Island is the 3rd largest island of New Zealand being 64 km long and 40 km at its widest. Stewart Island has the nation's newest National Park, Rakiura National Park. The population of Stewart Island is only about 600. The Maori people lived on Stewart Island since the 13th century. Timber milling, tin mining, sealing, whaling, and fishing have all been industries on the island at some point in time since the Europeans arrived in the early 1800's. Fishing is still an industry with salmon, mussels, abalone and rock lobster, being caught or farmed. Tourism is the other industry providing the locals with an income. Stewart Island consists of rugged terrain, primarily covered in dense forest, making this wild, isolated, and sometimes cold island, a veritable paradise for rare birds. Some of the birds this island is famous for are Parakeet, Tui, Kaka, Dotterel, Robin, Bell bird, Fern bird, and most importantly the Stewart Island Kiwi. There are also plenty of seabirds such as Petrels, Albatross, Cormorants, and Penguins, both blue and yellow eye. Popular activities here include birdwatching, bush walking, hiking, fishing, boating and diving. Stewart Island is the only location left where there is actually a chance for birdwatchers to see the Kiwi in its natural environ. You can also go deer hunting on Stewart Island. The main settlement is situated in Halfmoon Bay and has a general store, postal agency, and a Department of Conservation Visitor Centre.
