Siem Reap Holidays Overview
This is the capital city of Siem Reap Province of Cambodia. The city is currently undergoing a tourism boom and tourism based establishments have flourished in recent years. Its name literally translates to “defeat of siam”, in reference to centuries of vicious battles.
The area is a former French colony and was also under Thai control for a number of years. The Angkor area was rediscovered by the French in 1901 after a long period of isolation from the world. The first tourists begun arriving in 1907 and by 1929 was a major tourist destination in Asia. The Khmer Rouge rebels evacuated the city in 1975. Stability in this region was only restored in the mid 1990s.
The city has a population of just about 140, 000 people. The weather is warm all year round averaging 30 degrees Celsius. Rainfall can be particularly heavy from May to October.
