Shenyang Holidays Overview
Shenyang is a sub-provincial city in the Liaoning province of China. It is located in the north eastern region of China and along with Shanghai and Tianjin they make up the three most important industrial cities in China. The name literally translates to, “city to the north of Shen river”. This is because of the Hun River that is on the southern side of the city and which used to be referred to as the Shen River. Historically, the city has also been known as Shengjing or Fengtian. Evidence shows that this area was settled as early as 7 millennia ago. The city was first established around 300 BC and has been ruled by various empires and civilizations over the years. The city was invaded by the Japanese and occupied from 1932 to 1945. It was briefly controlled by the Kuomintang from 1946 to 1948 before falling to the communist forces in late 1948. Shenyang has a population of over 7 million inhabitants is one of the top ten largest cities in China. The Han Chinese are the majority and there are 37 minority groups living in the city. There is also a large foreign population especially from Japan and Korea. The climate in Shenyang is characterized by cold dry winters and hot humid summers. The winter can get very cold with temperatures hitting minus 5 degrees Celsius due to the cold winds blowing from Siberia. It is coldest during January. Winter runs from December to February while summer begins in June and ends in August.

The city of Shenyang has a number of festivals happening during the year. One of the more famous is The Shenyang International Ice & Snow Festival which takes place from December to February every year during winter. There is lots of ice and snow entertainment including ice sculptures and an ice lantern festival. There is also the Shenyang International Qing Dynasty Culture Festival. Being the birthplace of the Qing Dynasty, the city of Shenyang is endowed with a rich culture and history. This Festival has been held every September since 1998.
