Shannon (Limerick) Holidays Overview
With a population of around one million, Limerick is the third largest city in Ireland and is located in County Limerick in the west of Ireland. Limerick is also part of the Shannon region, named after the river, which extends from the midlands to the Atlantic Ocean and includes the counties Clare, Limerick, North Tipperary and South Offaly. Limerick is one of the oldest cities in Ireland, dating back to at least the eighth century. It is a regional centre for shopping, theatre, dining and entertainment, and is also known as the sporting capital of Ireland, largely because of its devotion to rugby. In recent years it has become known as the setting of Frank McCourt’s autobiography, ‘Angela’s Ashes’. County Limerick is well worth a visit, with traditional thatched cottages and medieval churches to be found in picturesque villages.
