San Jose Holidays Overview
San Jose, California, is the third largest city in this state. It is to the south of the San Francisco Bay in the northern part of this geographically elongated state. Roughly 1 million people inhabit this city and practically 2 million reside in the greater metropolitan area. The climate is semi-arid. Mountains surround 2 sides of the city. The highest temperatures seldom climb above 29 degrees Celsius and the coldest nights rarely drop below 6 degrees. Roughly 30% of the inhabitants are white, 30% Asian and 30 % Latin American. The remaining of other and mixed ethnicities. At the heart of Silicon Valley, the economy is largely driven by technology enterprises. There are a number of public art works in the city. The downtown is home to several historic buildings. This area was settled by Europeans as early as the 1700s in the form of Spanish missionaries seeking to convert the aboriginal population. Various museums and cultural offerings can be found, including ballet and opera. There is a major league hockey team and football (soccer) team as well as other non professional teams in additional sports. The light rail line currently does not connect to the San Francisco, Bay Area system. Amtrak, the national rail, runs through here and there is also a bus system in the metro area. There are varied parks and some 80 km of trails which can be explored. The downtown area alone offers perhaps 100 restaurants featuring cuisines from around the world. Asian cuisine is a particular specialty of this city. There are boutique and luxury hotels as well as economical accommodations in diverse areas. More than 2 dozen golf courses are within or near the city limits. Nearly 50 bars and nightclubs are in San Jose, as well as more than a dozen malls, shopping areas and an outlet centre. Several vineyards can also be visited in San Jose or nearby, offering samples of northern California’s wines.

The Vietnamese Spring Festival and Parade was first celebrated in 1999. Today it draws at least 50,000 people each year. Floats and marching bands participate in this February event which is followed by a street fair. Organisers seek to alter perspective with the works displayed, shared and awarded prizes at the event. It is carried out in History Park and features Asian foods, games, Chinese music, martial arts and traditional dance. It is organized by the Chinese Historical and Cultural Project.
